LYMPHEDEMA PROGRAM

By Scottie Bull, PT, MLD/C
What is the treatment for Lymphedema ?
Presently, the most effective and least invasive approach recommended by physicians is Complete Decongestive Therapy, a combination of manual lymphatic drainage, bandaging/compression, remedial exercises and hygiene/skin care.
Patients are treated 5 days a week or in accordance with their physician's recommendations. Each treatment session consists of the following:
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (Dr. Vodder's technique)
Applying light, rhythmic pressure along lymphatic channels stimulating movement of the lymph fluid.
Specific manual movements along lymphatic pathways are performed to empty obstructive lymph vessels
Bandaging / Compression
Bandages are applied following each manual lymphatic drainage session
Bandages prevent accumulation of fluid between treatments
Once fluid reduction plateaus, the patient will be custom fitted for an elastic garment
Remedial ex (while wearing bandages)
Exercises promote venous and lymphatic flow by activating muscle pumps in swollen limbs
Hygiene and Topical Skin Care
Using low PH lotion
Teaching meticulous skin and nail care
Eliminating bacterial / fungal growth
